Applying for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) has become easier in 2025 via your Aadhaar e-KYC. The Aadhaar-based e-KYC method lets you apply for an Instant e‑PAN online, without any forms, documents, or delays. This guide walks you through the exact steps to get your PAN using Aadhaar in minutes. Let’s get started!

What is an e-PAN Card?

An e-PAN card is the digitalised version of your traditional PAN card issued by the Income Tax Department (ITD). It is a legally valid document serving the same purpose as a physical card issued with a password-protected PDF file. The card can be stored anywhere in your phone, computer or any drive, making it easily accessible.

How to Apply for an e-PAN Card with Aadhaar e-KYC

Applying for an e-PAN is quick and straightforward. Here is a detailed guide to apply for one:

Step 1: Accessing the Official Portal

  • Visit www.incometax.gov.in, the official website of the Income Tax Department.
  • Locate the ‘Quick Links’ section on the left of the homepage and click on ‘Instant E-PAN’ to begin your application process.
  • The page displays two primary options: ‘Get New e-PAN’ for first-time applicants and ‘Check Status/Download e-PAN’ for tracking existing applications. Select ‘Get New e-PAN’ to initiate your application.

Step 2: Initial Application Setup

On the ‘Get New e-PAN’ page, enter your complete 12-digit Aadhaar number. Type this number carefully, as any errors will prevent successful authentication.

  • The system will perform an initial validation to confirm your Aadhaar number format before proceeding to the next step.
  • Tick the checkbox to confirm you meet the eligibility for a new PAN: you aren’t a minor, do not already hold a PAN, have an active mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, and have your complete date of birth on your Aadhaar card.
  • Click ‘Continue’ to proceed to the authentication phase.

Note that a message will be displayed if your Aadhaar is already linked to a valid PAN (i.e., you aren’t eligible to apply since you already have a PAN), or if your Aadhaar is not linked with a valid mobile number (a requirement to complete e-KYC).

Step 3: Aadhaar Validation Process via OTP

  • Tick the checkbox that confirms your agreement with the consent terms to proceed to the OTP validation page.
  • The system will send a unique 6-digit one-time password to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar card. This OTP typically arrives within 30 seconds via SMS.
  • Enter the OTP; be sure to enter it correctly. However, if you receive an OTP late, you can resend it after a set duration (visible on the screen). Note that you have three attempts to enter the correct OTP, and each attempt is valid for 15 minutes.
  • Select the checkbox that confirms your consent to validate your Aadhaar details and click Continue.
  • The next page shows you your Aadhaar details, alongside important information like the legal liability of possessing over one PAN and the issuance of PAN based on Aadhaar. Select the checkbox confirming these details and click Continue.

Step 4: Email Validation

If your email address isn’t already validated in the Income Tax Department’s database, the system will prompt you to complete email validation. This step ensures you receive important communications about your PAN status and future correspondence.

  • If your email ID has been updated in Aadhaar but isn’t yet validated, click on ‘Validate email ID’. The system will send you an OTP on your mobile; enter it when prompted and click Continue.
  • If you’re yet to update your email ID, click ‘Link Email ID’ and follow the same steps, entering your email ID when prompted.

Step 5: Application Submission and Acknowledgement

Upon successful authentication and validation, the system processes your e-PAN request and generates an acknowledgement number. This unique reference number serves as your primary tracking tool for monitoring application status and retrieving your e-PAN. Save it carefully.

Step 6: Checking Application Status

Follow these steps to check your application status:

  1. Visit www.incometax.gov.in, and click on the ‘Instant E-PAN’ section again.
  2. This time, select ‘Check Status/Download PAN’.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number in the designated field and complete the captcha verification to prevent automated access. Click ‘Submit’ to proceed to the OTP verification stage.
  4. Enter the received OTP within the time limit and select the confirmation checkbox before clicking ‘Continue’.

The system will then display your PAN allotment status, showing whether your application is under process, completed, or requires additional action.

Step 7: Downloading Your e-PAN Document

  • If your application was successful, you’ll get the option to View e-PAN or Download e-PAN; click on the latter to download a copy.
  • The downloaded PDF file is password-protected for security purposes. Use your date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format as the password to open the document. For example, if you were born on 25th December 1985, your password would be 25121985. Enter this password without any spaces, hyphens, or special characters.
